Stream: synergy meeting vol.4

Four performances that explore intermedial relationships: I Speak, originating from Die Wolke’s Emergence, is a sensor-based performance that uses sensors on the dancer’s body to generate and affect sound and visuals in real time. Asymmetry explores mathematical representations of time to generate asymmetrical patterns that interact with live instrumental playing, further modulated by wearable sensors. Sonic Scapes will explore the creation of imagery using colours and fluids in unpredictable combinations, captured via a camera and projected on the wall, while a cyn = Xea is a study of discontinuity, resampling and the transformation of sensor input in the context of computer music.

The core question the pieces seek to answer is how space is transformed by its inhabitants. The pieces form a thread that runs from Die Wolke’s Trajectory of an Idea (2019), which considered affordance and metaphor as the core of interactive discourse, to Mirror (2025) that explored site-specificity and labyrinthine navigation. Andrey Smirnov’s reconstruction of the Terpsitone and his work with Helmholtz resonators further investigates the interplay between physical structures and interactive sound, creating a dynamic and unpredictable environment that responds to the presence and actions of the audience.

A collection of works that begin from rules and end somewhere those rules never pointed. Each is a system left to run: simple logics, repeated, producing forms no single instruction contains. The exhibition occupies the space between the determined and the undetermined, where order loosens into drift and drift gathers itself back toward order. Motion is held still, stillness remembers motion, and what emerges is never drawn, only grown.

ligh[t]wist lets light and form negotiate continuously, never settling into a final state. [a]symmetria moves audibly between disorder and symmetry, each state born from the other. ligh[t]wist geo I freezes a single trajectory of that motion into matte, silent relief. ligh[t]wist geo II holds two opposing rotations in suspended tension. Elementary Propagation I — Drift follows one rule set as certainty slowly dissolves into noise.

The accompanying sound works provide an orthogonal dimension to the exhibition as a whole, highlighting the man-machine boundary, a core conceptual variable in algorithmic art, through processes of sonic transformation and gestural contrasts.

The exhibition presents a record of the creative process used to generate the visual material for Die Wolke’s Mirror. Iterative in its approach, the methodology consists of repeatedly projecting photography with multiple projectors in a studio space, allowing the performers room to interact and meld with them, photographing the result, and repeating the process, with additional digital techniques. This recursion is central to the original work and Michael Ende’s book on which it is based, “Mirror in the Mirror”, and an excellent instance of a self-similar relationship between creative method and subject matter. The accompanying sound works are different versions of the original material composed for this project.

An approach that treats rhythm as a hierarchical structure like a tree, where each level of subdivision introduces new layers of complexity and asymmetry, allowing for algorithmic exploration of rhythmic patterns. The workshop is an overview of the key mechanisms that allow complex and asymmetric patterns to emerge, as well as practical examples of their application in real time musical performance and composition.

An overview of Touchdesigner, a high-performance visual programming environment for generative, algorithmic, and interactive visual creation. The node-based tool is the foundation for building complex visual systems in real time, allowing artists and designers to experiment with procedural graphics, interactive installations, and multimedia performances. The introductory workshop is an orientation to the core concepts, interface, and workflow of TouchDesigner.
