Cascade: beginning

Die Wolke art group and Vitruvian Thing present a new production, Cascade: beginning. Three performers and four musicians collaborate on the basis of a succession system:

CASCADE: something arranged or occurring in a series or in a succession of stages so that each stage derives from or acts upon the product of the preceding.

The performance features three original musical compositions: Dimitris Dalezis’ “Throb of Machinery part A” for trumpet and concrète sampling; Semeli Tagara’s “Isospin” for voice and saxophone with looping technique; and a two-part work by Dani Joss for bass clarinet and electronics, “Control” (from the soundtrack of the short dance film Imago Ep.II: Symmetry) and a new composition, “Conform” — both performed live by Thanos Sideris.

The choreography and performance by Sofia Papanikandrou, Maria Pisiou, and Drosia Triantaki arranges motion and use of space upon the music, as the divisions and performer/musician pairings become increasingly complicated and interdependent. Incorporating unavoidable improvisational elements, the piece develops an indirect commentary on the uncertainty that results from complex systems, both structurally and qualitatively.

Cascade: beginning is the first work in Die Wolke’s “Cascade” series, followed the same year by Cascade: point of no return.
