Unit Motives: Cage

Open Call

Unit Motives:Cage by Die Wolke art group

Die Wolke art group calls, for a second consecutive year, Thessaloniki-based choreographers to its Unit Motives initiative for the creation of solo contemporary dance works on musical works by great composers. This year, the event aims to explore the different kinetic and choreographic approaches to the interpretation of works by John Cage, as well as his compositional methods.

Cage (1912-1992) was an American composer, theorist, and writer. A pioneer in the use of indeterminacy and randomness in composition and performance, he is regarded as one of the most important representatives of post-war avant-garde. His contributions to contemporary dance were also significant, through his relationship with choreographer Merce Cunningham.

Applicants will be called to participate with a short solo piece of their own choreography and performance, with a duration of 5-10 minutes, under the choreographic direction of Drosia Triantaki. The results will be presented at Vitruvian Thing on March 24 and 25. Works should be adaptable to available space and their stage and lighting requirements should be simple and flexible. The individual works will be arranged and merged into a single performance that will explore contemporary and historical approaches to the work and philosophy of the composer.

Application deadline: Sunday, January 28
Performance: Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25, 20:00 and 22:00 (possibility of extension for March 31 and April 1, gen. rehearsal March 23)
Choreographic direction: Drosia Triantaki
